Q: What is the "Learn to Dive" program schedule like?
A: Learning to scuba dive is convenient and fun. We have several different program formats to choose from.  Group classes are conducted two nights a week over a minimum of five weeks, usually 6:30 – 9:00 pm. Group class size is 2-6 students per instructor.  Semi-Flex and Flex schedules are available as scheduled.

Q: What’s involved with learning to dive?

A: Learning to dive isn’t difficult, but it requires a time and effort investment.  Learning to dive isn’t difficult, but like any activity worth doing, it requires some time and effort. Taking a Bob’s Dive Shop “Learn to Dive” program is as easy as 1-2-3.

You’ll enjoy three phases of training: Knowledge Development Classes, Skill Development Dives in our on-site heated pool and Open Water Dives:

  • Step 1 - Knowledge Development Classes These sessions develop your familiarity with basic principles and procedures of SCUBA Diving. You learn things like how pressure affects your body, how to choose the best equipment and what to consider when planning dives.
You review what you studied in the student manual and DVD with your instructor to be sure you’re comfortable with the material.
  • Step 2 - Skills Development Dives This is what it’s all about – You develop the basic scuba skills diving in a controlled environment – our on site heated pool. You’ll develop the skills (from setting up your equipment to how to easily get water out of your mask without surfacing). You’ll also practice some emergency skills, like sharing air – just in case. Plus make new friends, have a great time and plan some exciting dive trips!  There are five confined water dives, with each building upon the previous. Over the course of these five dives, you attain the skills you need to dive in open water.
  • Step 3 - Open Water Dives After your confined water dives, you and your new friends continue learning during five open water dives with your BDS Instructor at a local dive site. Unlike other sports SCUBA diving requires a certification card to verify proper training and Experience.  Bob’s Dive Shop training is accepted worldwide.  This “certification” training is generally conducted in two days in Monterey.  These are your first actual dives but with an instructor for your comfort and enjoyment.

Q: How soon can I become a Certified Diver?

A: You’ll be diving in less time than you think. Typically, you complete the Bob’s Dive Shop “Learn To Dive” Programs course over three to six weeks, depending upon which program you choose and how fast you adapt and become comfortable underwater.  The speed is NOT the thing to focus on. Your comfort, safety and the level of enjoyment you experience is!

You’ll be diving in the first week of your program.  All BDS programs are performance and competency based, we are interested in your comfort and safety learning to dive, not in how long you sit in a class. This means that you progress at your own pace!

Q: What’s required?
A: Good general health and comfort in the water qualifies you to begin a “Learn to Dive” program at Bob’s Dive Shop.

Q: What
instructional materials and diving equipment is included with a "Learn to Dive" Program?

A: Bob's Dive Shop will provide the SSI  Open Water Diver materials. These include the SSI Open Water Diver Manual, DVD or Video, Dive Tables and Personal DiveLog System.

All life support scuba equipment will be provided for your initial training lessons.  Personal fit and sanitary equipment is required of each diver and available at BDS Student Prices during your training.  Just like a pilot needs manuals to study so do divers and they vary with the program you select and are not included in the course prices below.

Q:
What types of training and credentials do your instructors have?
A: All Bob’s Dive Shop instructors are skillfully trained and certified by an international certification agency.  Our staff instructors have met all requirements of the RSTC (Recreational SCUBA Training Council) under SSI and/or PADI membership.  The instructors goal is to help you get comfortable underwater so you can develop the confidence to explore the underwater world with us or on your own.

Q: How much does diving cost?
A:  Learning to Dive compared to getting started in other popular outdoor activities isn’t expensive.  Compared with getting started in other popular outdoor activities learning to dive isn’t expensive. For example, you can expect to pay about the same as you would for:
  • a day on the slopes
  • a full day of surfing lessons
  • a weekend of kayaking lessons
  • a weekend of fly-fishing lessons
  • three private golf lessons
  • three hours of private water skiing lessons

Learning to dive is a great value when you consider that your BDS Staff Instructor is a highly trained and experienced professional. Invest in scuba diving lessons and then travel the world with the BDS Sub Club.

Q:What equipment will I need to start my “Learn to Dive” program?

A: As a minimum, you will want your own Personal Snorkeling System (mask, fins and snorkel, etc.) when you begin your program. This equipment is considered personal fit and sanitary equipment and is important to your comfort, safety and enjoyment of snorkeling and SCUBA Diving.  BDS will help you select the equipment that has the proper fit and features best suited to you. You’re more comfortable and more safe using equipment personally fitted for you.

Q: Where can I dive?

A: You can dive anywhere there’s water – from a swimming pool to the ocean and everywhere in between, including quarries, lakes, rivers and springs.

Your experience level, site accessibility, conditions and your interests determine where you dive. Some of the best diving is closer than you think!  The California Channel Island and Monterey Bay are considered among the most elite dive sites in the World!
BDS can help you organize great local diving or a exotic dive vacation. Our Sub Club organizes dive travel excursions around the world.

Bob’s Dive Shop Training Philosophy

Diving offers a lifetime of exciting adventure and the ideal way to begin that adventure is with BDS’s Open Water Diver course. We ARE NOT A SCUBA DRIVE THRU – we offer more classes, more one-on-one coaching, more pool time and more time diving! The amount of time it takes for you to feel comfortable and confident is different for everyone and the amount of time it takes really doesn’t matter because it is all about having fun and preparing for your underwater adventures.

Under the guidance of a professional diving Instructor, you will gradually develop the knowledge and skills necessary to enjoy a lifetime of underwater exploration.  We don’t cut corners with your safety.  SCUBA diving is a fun, relaxing sport, but it does have its risks.  Other programs rush you through training – WE WILL NOT!  We make the training fun and give you the time it takes to become confident with your skills.

Knowledge

Bob’s Dive Shops modular, six-session teaching system includes a video, manual, study guide, DiveLog System and dive tables. Our training approach, allows you to minimize your time in the classroom allowing for more time in the water developing ability and comfort.

Skills

In multiple pool and open water sessions, you will practice scuba skills with our exclusive Comfort Through Repetition teaching method. Some of the skills you will learn include:

  • Moving in the water with ease
  • Breathing normally under water
  • Controlling buoyancy so you neither descend nor ascend
  • The easiest ways to enter and exit the water
  • Getting water out of your mask or mask clearing

Equipment

Since you can't dive without equipment, there is extensive information on scuba equipment including:
  • Selecting the best diving equipment for your needs and budget
  • Maintaining and adjusting your equipment to extend its life and improve performance
  • With the goal being to develop a working knowledge of scuba equipment, divers will receive an introduction to
different scuba equipment with an emphasis on equipment handling.
Experience
Behaviorists understand that it takes 21 days of practice to form a new habit and the BDS program is based on this theory.  Our on site heated pool allows you the opportunity to use the facility to practice at no additional expense and develop your skills prior to entering the ocean.  We believe you should focus on having fun in the program and not focus on time pressures you or others may place on the training process.  Remember, Mom said, practice makes perfect.
